This morning we took a close look at the Task Bar in Vista most of which also applied to XP. The task bar has three areas:
The left side is the Quick Launch Bar whilst the right side is the SysTray or as it is now called the Notification Area.
The details of the items on the Quick Launch Bar are held in a folder and one of the easiest ways to navigate to this folder is to enter the following in the Search Box
%appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
This should then display the folder with the programs on the Quick Launch Bar.
Items can then be added or deleted from this folder. Alternatively items may be dragged from the desktop to the bar to add items or items may be deleted by right clicking on the item and selecting delete.
If the Quick Launch Bar is not visible right click on the bar to display the following menu:
Select Properties to display the following panel
Ensure that the Show Quick Launch box is ticked and select Apply.
The Systray or Notification area may hold many items. These programs will be loded at Start Up time(boot up) and should be kept to only those applications that you require at Start Up. One of the best utilities to monitor what is happening at start up is Glary Utilities which may be downloaded at www.glaryutilities.com/gu.html
(it's free)
Not only can you see what is in the Start Up but you can also see whether the program is necessary
During the second session we started to look at some of the new itemsin Word 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010. We will continue this investigation during the following weeks. The Beta version of Office 2010 may be downloaded free but it is 764mb download. Alternatively it is now available on the cover disc of some Computer Magazines.
